WTF? Book Review - The Zrakon's Bride

The Blurb:

Beauty Meets Her Beast

Are maidens still sacrificed to sea dragons? Kate Beaton is a lover of folklore tales about beauties and beasts, maidens and monsters, princesses and frogs. But when she visits a quaint Scottish village, she is surprised to find that they take the ancient legends seriously.

Ross Malloch is a modern Highland laird with a family secret-there have been shape shifters at Mallochbirn for centuries. The Zrakon is in his blood. And on Midsummer's Eve, the only thing his alpha male sea dragon can think about is finding his one true mate

My Review:

I had to class this as a WTF? review, it's a paranormal romance featuring a shape shifting sea dragon for Pete's sake! It is a well written and entertaining tale that, to this reviewer at least, had an air of the Wicker Man about it in certain scenes.
We meet Ross (hot highland laird, vet and shape-shifter) and Kate (insanely beautiful, brave, can talk to animals, loves myths and legends ) and the Zrakon of the title.  Between all of them there are some pretty hot sex scenes.  While I enjoyed the story overall, the fact that the book rattles along at a fast pace is a massive bonus plus it is a fun read; there were times I found the dialogue wooden. I also found that parts of the story didn't make sense with the mythology.  It also didn't help that whenever I read the word Zrakon it does come out in my head as Zac Efron but I digress......

Would I recommend it?  Yes.  Like I said it was fun, it was quick and well written.

"Get out of my face." I wanted to spit on her. I knew it would be gross, but I wanted to do that more than anything. Teach her a lesson.
She didn't move. "Why? Just so you can mess with Blake some more? You know some of us are a little tired of your shit Lena."
"Back up Harli. I only wanted to talk to Blake. Nothing else."
She rolled her eyes. "It starts with a conversation. Then it's always more."
I swirled the spit in my mouth and swallowed it. She was right. I did want more.

Synopsis

“I was the little girl who loved you from afar. I was the woman who gave herself away for you and ended up losing a lot of who she was.”
“Then allow me to give back some of what I stole.”
After being dumped by her fiancĂ©, Eleanor Carrington flees to Paris to help her self-medicated mother. While keeping her mom from popping pills like gummy bears, Eleanor launches a new, no-strings-attached life plan with absolutely NO falling in love whatsoever. On her part at least, because her self-esteem could do with one or two Frenchmen going un peu crazy for her.
What she doesn’t need is for her first Grand Amour, Zachary Murdoch, to burst back into her life. Whatever shit-show she’s just been through was a stroll. What Zach put her though was a climb up Mount Everest. Barefoot. In a bikini.
Now a club-owner in Paris, Zach is intrigued by the troubled woman who was once the sweet girl he had to give up. Offering a shoulder for her to cry on is what he owes her. Loving her is what he lost the right to. Because there’s a reason he broke up with Lenor and that reason is why she’s in Paris.
But Paris is known as the City of Love…
Will he be her turn at love?

Review - Come Home for Christmas Cowboy by Megan Crane

I am a complete sucker for second chance romance books.  I'm also a secret fan of Christmas romances and this sweet little novel fufilled both of those for me.

When we first meet Christina Cooper and her sexy husband, Dare, there is not much hope for their marriage. Christina (formerly Christina Grey which made me chuckle) is desperately unhappy. She lives in a city she doesn't like, hates her job, thinks Dare's having an affair as he is being such an ass.  She has to remind him it's her 30th birthday and he's so distant and uncaring that she finally leaves him and heads home to Montana......

I loved Christina.  I felt for her and I cheered when she finally kicked Dare to the curb for his ill treatment and headed home to her loving family.  The Grey family are fabulous by the way and reminds me of my own!

I started out not liking Dare at all but by the end he had thoroughly redeemed himself in my eyes. I loved that he chased after her and finally saw the error of his ways.

It is a quick, well written read and it was one of those magical, elusive books that once I'd started I couldn't put down. I liked it.. a lot!

Blog Tour - Femme Fatale by Kirsty-Ann Still

My Review

If I could sum this book up in a few words it would be dark, sexy but dark.  For example within the first few chapters there are two quite horrific murders.  Now I know sweet Kirsty-Ann Still but on this basis of this I wouldn't want to get on her bad side! (She knows I'm kidding) but seriously.....

We meet Amelia, the Femme Fatale in question.  The daughter of Mafia boss, Salvatore Abbiati.  She could have been a mafia princess but she became her family's secret weapon, an assassin with an alarmingly high kill rate.  She is assigned by her father to kill her former boyfriend (and love of her life) Zane Maverick.

Don't feel, don't deviate, just kill.

Will she do it?  You'll have to read it and see but I will say that the ending is one hell of a cliff hanger!!

That's not to say that I didn't see problems.  The story itself is very very good and i'm not sure if it's because it's an ARC but I kept spotting mistakes.  Which was a shame as it took away some of the enjoyment for me.  It's nothing that can't be corrected with a good edit and don't let it put you off.

As I've said before in my reviews, I value honesty and and it doesn't sit right with me not to say what I think.  I've watched Kirsty grow as an author over the past few years and I'm very proud of her.  She should be proud of herself for this book.

I enjoyed it and look forward to the next one.

Find on

They call me the Femme Fatale.
But only because they don’t know me.
My job - seduce men to the climatic point of falling in love with me and then deliver their death sentence.
I work for my father’s business. I’m his secret weapon. I’m the one that gets away with murder.
For years, I’ve given in to my father’s demands, lived the life of a mob princess, fell into this merciless realm where he presents me with a man and one goal – to kill.
When it’s to keep the Abbiati name from ruins, I’ll run with the wolves and protect it fiercely.
However, when he brings a new name to the table, I know my newest mission could well be the one that breaks me - Don’t feel, don’t deviate, kill Zane Maverick.
It should be simple, but how am I supposed to choose between the man who raised me to be this heartlessly strong female and the man I could only ever love to death?

“You’re fucking insane,” I cuss at him and push him away but his stance is too heavy, and he doesn’t budge.
“I know you, Amelia. I know how you loved him once. You’re so fickle as it is, why wouldn’t you be fucking him to bide some time. The way you walk around here like you’re queen bee too, sickens me. You will never run this place, and soon, everyone will look down on you like me and PapĂ  do. Everyone sees this strong, beautiful woman, but maybe we should let them see the real you. The weak victim you hide from everyone.” He leans in close to me to a suffocating degree. “What would happen if I were to run this down your face?” he asks and presents his infamous switchblade. The knife shoots from its hilt, the light glistening from its metal edge. “I didn’t get you a gift, but I have a perfect one for you now,” he says and begins to lower it to my face. “A scar right down your face would be a perfect reminder to keep you in line. Even Maverick wouldn’t want a butchered bitch.”
I close my eyes as I prepare for that piercing bite on my skin, but Giovanni’s weight suddenly disappears, and I’m left cowering to an empty space. Once I pry them open, I see why. Bruno has arrived and has Giovanni thrown over the pool table by the collar of his shirt and blazer.
“You are one sadistic bastard, Giovanni,” Bruno spits and releases Giovanni enough to allow him to turn to face his brother. “I knew there was reason I fucking despised you. If I didn’t have cause before, what I just witnessed was a real clincher.”
“Get the fuck away from me,” Giovanni grunts, straightening his shirt and jacket back.
That ignites more hate in my brother. “One day you are going to wake up with your balls shoved down your throat, Gio.” Bruno terrorizes Giovanni while we all stand and watch. Bruno towers over our brother when he is riled up, and I have to admit, that look of fear on Giovanni’s face is too fucking good to miss. “And I’ll be the one holding the knife. Threaten our little sister again, and I will make your biggest nightmares come true. Capisci?”
Clapping resounds after Bruno’s warning, and we all turn to see our father standing in the doorway. I sense Giovanni stand up, straightening himself and regaining his composure.
“I knew you still had that Abbiati fight still left in you, Figlio Mio.”
“Cut the fatherly duty, Salvatore. I am far from your son.” Bruno’s demeanor doesn’t relinquish its hardened stance. If anything, our father’s sudden appearance only bristles Bruno furthermore. “I’m here to celebrate my sister’s birthday, not tear away psychopaths from permanently scarring her.”

I used to be just another Fanfiction writer! That was until one person showed real interest in my work. And then another, and then another, until I had this whole group of people reviewing like crazy and wanting original work from me. I’d spent years writing for free online, I didn’t believe I had it in me to publish something!
But I’m glad I did!! I never imagined pushing my work and striving to reach my ultimate. I never imagined I’d be the girl who started The Viper Rooms! But who am I to deny the inspiration when it hits?
I love writing, it’s a lifeline. I love creating a world that others fall into. I love having the control to make a whole new world. It’s like a dependency, an addictive one. It’s one of the things I’m extremely proud of.
As much as I complain, I love the mini dialogues that go on in my head, the plotlines that attack me when I least expect them to. The ones that jump to life at the most inappropriate times and drive me totally crazy!!
For now I split my life between writing, dreaming, working, and volunteering with children.

Game On by Collette West Blog Tour!

The Blurb

Pitching phenom Bruce "Jilly" Gillette has a hard time talking to women. His hulking presence of tattoos and muscles is what makes him an intimidating closer on the mound, yet off the field, he's painfully shy, uncomfortable in his own skin.

Desperate to revamp his loner image, the New York Kings hold a dream date contest, granting the lucky winner a night on the town with their surly reliever, doing whatever it takes to force Jilly out of his comfort zone.

Hailey Halpert enters the contest on a whim, looking for answers as to why her high school relationship with Jilly hit the skids. Now she’s a popular romance author writing under a pen name, and her reappearance in Jilly's life is no accident. It turns out that her novels are all about the sexy players on the Kings, and Jilly has no clue that he's about to become her new leading man.

My Review

Let me start out by saying that I liked this book.

I liked the love story between Jilly and Hailey, I thought it was sweet.  I loved that Jilly was an introvert who enjoys genealogy.  I can relate, I like stuff like that too; I never was one of the popular crowd either.

I loved loved loved the second chance element.  That two people who couldn't get it together in High School were finally getting their chance to be together.

Overall, I enjoyed the book itself.

BUT there were elements of the story that had putting it down several times in frustration.

I found some of it a bit clunky.  I also couldn't understand why certain issues that arose would be a problem (not giving away spoilers) and characters were getting their knickers in a twist over it.

The 'will they/won't' was a tad overdone for me and Hailey, while sweet-natured and endearing, came across as a bit of a doormat and immature.

I feel horrible mentioning these  and I hope the author doesn't hate me but it wouldn't sit right with me not to give my honest opinion.

I would recommend it though, as I said I did enjoy it and the epilogue was lovely. A really beautiful HEA.

Excerpt

"Wow," she giggles, tracing the ridges of my face with her finger. "That didn't take long, did it?"

I flush under her lust-filled gaze. I didn’t know that my body was going to react this way. "I can…slow it down," I stammer. "If you're not ready to go again."

"Ready?" she whispers. "I think you'd better find a permanent place for me on your schedule—all night, every night." She playfully nudges me with her hips, causing me to groan in ecstasy.

"Why did we wait so long to do this again?" I moan.

"I think you mentioned something about being a slow learner," she teases me. "But let me assure you, you're a natural."

"So I'm more than just an arm to you?" I ask, quirking an eyebrow as I start to move her up and down on top of me.

"Way more," she agrees, closing her eyes, reveling in what I'm doing to her.

"I love you, Hailey," I declare as we move together as one.

She cradles the side of my face, and I turn my head to kiss her palm, bending my legs and resting her back against my knees, eager to try a new position.

Because this is a game I'll never get tired of playing—as long as I can play it with her.

About Collette West

Collette West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had seats behind the dugout for a sold-out, highly-anticipated match-up between two of baseball's biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word were instilled in Collette's impressionable brain from a young age. No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance = a little slice of heaven.

Splitting her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette indulges her inner fangirl by going to as many games as she can from hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in existence onto her iPad. When she's not clicking away on her laptop, she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr. Right.
